Volunteer

Motivation. Determination. Character.

Because of the physical risks, we will not recruit. Volunteer candidates must come to us with the right combination of motivation, determination and character. Volunteer positions are available for escort teams in the field, logistical support on the ground, and domestic support in media outreach, logistics and fundraising.

What are the risks?

During the first eight months of 2009:

  • 12 humanitarian workers were wounded or injured
  • 11 humanitarian workers were kidnapped
  • 26 humanitarian workers were physically or sexually assaulted
  • 18 humanitarian workers were abducted during carjackings
  • 44 humanitarian workers were arrested or detained by the Sudanese government
  • 2 humanitarian workers were kidnapped during carjackings and remain missing

Note: Statistics do not include UNAMID or Sudanese nationals (source: UN OCGA/Report UN SG)

One Who Decided

Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide,
In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side;
Some great cause, some great decision,
Offering each the bloom or blight,
And the choice goes by forever,
‘twixt that darkness and that light.

— Hymn sung at Bingham family gatherings in memory of Hiram Bingham IV, an American diplomat posted in France whose brave, unauthorized actions saved 2,500 French Jews in 1941.

Appeal

"We will go where we need to go to protect civilians in conflict zones and to prevent or stop genocide."

We are not naïve idealists. Most of us have international experience, much of it in Africa. We value experience, but our minimum requirements for volunteers are motivation, determination and character. Because of the risks we do not recruit. Volunteers must come to us.

We are reaching out, though, to like-minded citizens of the world. We appeal for help from those who, like us, are frustrated with the status quo and tired of waiting for our leaders.

While they wrung their hands and made empty pronouncements, six years passed and more than 200,000 Darfuris died at the hands of others and almost 3,000,000 became homeless.

Our leaders take us nowhere. Join us. We are not waiting any longer.
